The Internet of Things is a hot topic recently. As the power of inexpensive low power microprocessors increases they are appearing in more and more devices and products. By networking these devices together we can enable ways to interact with our homes and the things that we carry with us in ways that have never been possible. One popular example is the growing use of network-connected thermostats that allow us to monitor and control our homes remotely. Tom Coughlin is the organizer of the Storage Visions Conferences. Interconnected intelligent devices (things) will also change the way we work and interact with the things around us. Sensor networks will allow better industrial controls in manufacturing plants as well as new opportunities for energy conservation in office environments. The propagation of intelligent devices and networking will place new strains on and requirements for the Internet and provide new opportunities for digital storage technology to support ...

First Things First: Update Your System I am one of those people who tend to keep their system updated. I don’t wait for a whole month for a long list of packages to be updated. That’s where a lot of things tend to go wrong, because you are making way too many changes to the system at the same time. Incremental updates are safer; they are better So, I recommend running updates on a daily or weekly basis. To do this, open the terminal and refresh repos: sudo apt-get update Then, run system updates: sudo apt-get dist-upgrade Your system is now up to date. Customize Ubuntu Unity is not known for customization options, but with 16.04, there are some new choices. For example, you can now choose where you want to display the menu -- in the top bar or in app windows. In addition to that, you can also disable menu items from auto-hiding. To gain some control over menus on your Ubuntu machine, open System Settings > Appearance and go to the Behavior tab. There, you can...
PLC Introduction

Programmable logic controllers Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) have been an integral part of factory automation and industrial process control for decades. PLCs control a wide array of applications from simple lighting functions to environmental systems to chemical processing plants. These systems perform many functions, providing a variety of analog and digital input and output interfaces; signal processing; data conversion; and various communication protocols. All of the PLC's components and functions are centered around the controller, which is programmed for a specific task. The basic PLC module must be sufficiently flexible and configurable to meet the diverse needs of different factories and applications. Input stimuli (either analog or digital) are received from machines, sensors, or process events in the form of voltage or current. The PLC must accurately interpret and convert the stimulus for the CPU which, in turn, defines a set of instru...

Robotics spans multiple scientific and engineering disciplines, so when you want to design a better robot you should get some basic knowledge in these fields. How much you should learn depends on how complex you want to make your robot. To give an example: A small tethered tabletop robot would only require some basic knowledge in electronics and programming, a shoe box sized robot would require some additional knowledge on mechanics (mostly about balance) and a large robot might even require some knowledge on solid mechanics. This page covers the fields that are very much used in robotics. You don't need to know everything about all of these subjects, however knowing the basics of each of these fields can help in building better robots and prevent you from making (some of the) beginner's mistakes. Mechanics Mechanics is about: How forces are transferred between the different parts of a construction. Where the center of gravity lies. Friction Position, ...

MEMS/NEMS devices are sensitive to a wide range of stimuli such as temperature, mass, pressure and are thus extensively used as sensors in cars and mobile phones. The biggest promise of MEMS and NEMS technology is the development of extremely small sensor systems that can be used virtually everywhere and thus can impart intelligence to almost all man-made things. NEMS sensors for mass spectrometry applications : NEMS devices due to the small size are extremely sensitive to changes in its properties. This property has recently been utilized to demonstrate mass spectrometry on biomolecules using extremely sensitive NEMS devices. As part of the sensors area in Prof. Akshay Naik‘s group, NEMS devices made of carbon nanotubes are being used as extremely sensitive mass sensors to measure mass of individual protein molecules. Research emphasis in this area includes the fabrication of suspended single walled carbon nanotubes and development of an ultra-high vacuum ...

Sensors Sensor is a device that when exposed to a physical phenomenon (temperature, displacement, force, etc.) produces a proportional output signal (electrical, mechanical, magnetic, etc.). The term transducer is often used synonymously with sensors. However, ideally, a sensor is a device that responds to a change in the physical phenomenon. On the other hand, a transducer is a device that converts one form of energy into another form of energy. Sensors are transducers when they sense one form of energy input and output in a different form of energy. For example, a thermocouple responds to a temperature change (thermal energy) and outputs a proportional change in electromotive force (electrical energy). Therefore, a thermocouple can be called a sensor and or transducer. Actuators Actuators are basically the muscle behind a mechatronics system that accepts a control command (mostlyin the form of an electrical sign...

Microprocessor and Microcontroller A microprocessor is an integrated circuit (IC) which incorporates core functions of a computer’s central processing unit (CPU). It is a programmable multipurpose silicon chip, clock driven, register based, accepts binary data as input and provides output after processing it as per the instructions stored in the memory. How does a Microprocessor work ? A processor is the brain of a computer which basically consists of Arithmetical and Logical Unit (ALU), Control Unit and Register Array. As the name indicates ALU performs all arithmetic and logical operations on the data received from input devices or memory. Register array consists of a series of registers like accumulator (A), B, C, D etc. which acts as temporary fast access memory locations for processing data. As the name indicates, control unit controls the flow of instructions and data throughout the system. So basically a microprocessor takes input from input devices, pro...

Introduction to Mechatronics What is Mechatronics? • The word mechatronics is composed of “mecha” from mechanical and the “tronics” from electronics. Mechanical + Electronics = Mechatronics “Mecha” + “tronics” = Mechatronics • The term “Mechatronics” was coined by Tetsuro Mori, a senior Japanese engineer at Yasakawa Company in 1969.

PLC is a Robust Industrial computer. Easy to operate, simply runs codes given to it and can handle lots of inputs & outputs. SCADA is a Control, surveillance & automation execution design. It’s a plan of how to set up Industrial automation, a surveillance system to check remote units in a plant & take control if something goes wrong by using surveillance computers which are connected to devices in plant’s units. SCADA has 5 components which speak of elements needed to achieve such a system. They include sensors, alarms(to gain the working state of a unit in the plant),WLAN & LAN, OPC servers(for the purpose of communication between sensors and the surveillance team in control room), PLC(a computer to process signals from various sensors on field and present a simplified information about the unit's status & such), RTUs which are wireless control units, HMI (human machine interfaces where we can check n interact with an interface and man...

History of IoT Kevin Ashton, co-founder of the Auto-ID Center at MIT, first mentioned the internet of things in a presentation he made to Procter & Gamble (P&G) in 1999. Wanting to bring radio frequency ID (RFID) to the attention of P&G's senior management, Ashton called his presentation "Internet of Things" to incorporate the cool new trend of 1999: the internet. MIT professor Neil Gershenfeld's book, When Things Start to Think , also appearing in 1999, didn't use the exact term but provided a clear vision of where IoT was headed. IoT has evolved from the convergence of wireless technologies, microelectromechanical systems ( MEMS ), microservices and the internet. The convergence has helped tear down the silos between operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT), enabling unstructured machine-generated data to be analyzed for insights to drive improvements. Although Ashton's was the first mention of the internet of ...
